Motivation vs Ability

What is it?

Motivation vs ability describes the balance between a user’s desire to act and their capacity to do so. Even highly motivated users may fail to convert if ability barriers are too high.

Both factors must be addressed for action to occur.

Examples in Action

  • High intent users blocked by complex forms
  • Strong demand undermined by poor usability
  • Simple flows enabling lower-intent users
  • Friction preventing motivated behaviour

Typical Outcomes / Results

  • Improved conversion when ability barriers are removed
  • More realistic interpretation of intent
  • Clearer prioritisation of usability improvements
  • Better alignment between design and behaviour

This definition reflects foundational behavioural models.
